Radio Show

Hi Friends -As many of you know, “It Takes a Parent” is moving to a full hour starting July 6th at noon! We’re getting ready for the new show, so this week’s show is a reairing of a really good program in January with Lee Hotz on how we are built for optimism - how do we exercise that inclination more regularly? (The show originally aired on January 18th.) Please tune in today at 2:00 central on AM1160/WYLL! Meanwhile, I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on features you’d like to see in the new hour long show! I always love hearing from my listeners at sendtohart@comcast.net or use the contact button on the main page.

Cheers! Betsy

Radio Show - Words Kids Need to Hear

Hi friends - I hope you will listen into the show today as, in honor of Mother’s Day, I interview David Staal on his new book “Words Kids Need to Hear.” (See below.) David is my friend and head of Children’s Ministries at Willowcreek Community Church in Barrington, and he’s fantastic. You will really want to hear the “7 things” he focuses on in his new book (Zondervan.) I hope you’ll tune in today at 2:00 pm central on AM1160, streaming live at www.wyll.com, or later here or at www.nationalreview.com.

(By the way, sorry we had technical problems getting the show up last week, but we are good to go now!)

Thanks for stopping by - Betsy Hart

Radio Show - of CEO’s and Office Ho’s. . .

Hi friends - I hope you’ll tune in today to “It Takes a Parent” live at 2:00 central. I’ll be talking to Donna Freitas, author of “Sex and the Soul,” about what is going on on college campuses and the “hook-up” culture today. I posted her WSJ article on “CEO’s and Office Ho’s” parties yesterday! Moms and dads of college age kids - and anyone who knows, or who will be, such a mom or dad someday - are definitely going to want to tune into this one! You can listen today at 2:00 p.m. , AM1160 Chicago, www.wyll.com, or here after the show and podcast on NationalReview.com

Thanks for listening.

Radio Show - Does Character Count?

Hi Friends - I hope you’ll join producer Lynne and me as we talk live to nationally syndicated columnist and best selling author Mona Charen. Today Mona takes on the public schools and their attempts to teach a “character curriculum.” Is such a thing a band-aid response to moral decay, or worse an oxymoron in the public schools (which Mona’s kids, mine and Lynne’s all attend, by the way)? On the other hand, what’s wrong with taking a stab at teaching “trustworthiness” for instance? What are some secular resources that parents concerned about these things should know about? We’ll discuss it all today a 2:00 central, on AM1160 WYLL Chicago. You can also listen at wyllc.com, or later today here or on nationalreview.com.

As always - thanks for listening!

Radio Show - Expelled!

Hi friends - I hope you enjoy today’s show about the upcoming movie, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” featuring Ben Stein. As one wag said, it’s sort of a “Michael Moore Film on Truth Serum.” The film shows how in academica, one is not allowed to even question the theory of evolution in whole or in part. If one hints at belief in a creator - one’s career, especially at the highest levels, is through.

Why do today’s scientists hate God so much?

“Expelled” opens in 1000 theaters (a huge opening for a film like this) April 18 and today I talked with Mark Mathis, one of the film’s producers. As always, you can listen to the show here via podcast, or tomorrow “ditto” on NationalReview.com.

As always, thanks for listening!

(And, stay tuned for some exciting news that I hope to be able to announce next week!)

Radio Show - Are We Really Headed to a Recession?

Hi friends - it’s all about the economy today - what’s a parent to do?? Tune in to WYLL/AM1160, “It Takes a Parent,” when I talk to Dan Miller, leading Chicago business writer and economic observer, formerly with the Chicago Sun-Times and now with the Heartland Institute. Are the economists overreacting when they predict a real recession? What can a family do to deal with falling home prices, mortgage rate hikes, and maybe 4$ a gallon gas? Tune in to find out at 2:00 central, or later catch the podcast here on on NationalReview.com

I’ll also be introducing you to a new sponsor, Timothy Christian Schools in Elmhurst, which two of my kids attend. They have an open house coming on April 15 - if you are considering a private education, you’ll want to consider Timothy!

As always, thanks for listening!

Radio Show - Girls Gone Mild

Hi Friends - Today’s show is “best of” - I hope you’ll tune in! I talk with Wendy Shalit about her book, “Girls Gone Mild” - in an oversexualized culture, how do we help girls to value what’s truly beautiful about themselves? How do we help our sons to see girls as people, not the sex objects the culture wants to make them into? You can listen at 2:00 central time on AM1160 WYLL, live streaming at WYLL.com, or later today get the podcast here or on NationalReview.com (where you can easily download the podcast). As always - thanks so much for listening!

Radio Show - Adele Faber and “Siblings Without Rivalry”

Hi friends - I hope you’ll listen to the show today. Producer Lynne and I talk to Adele Faber, best selling author, about her books “Siblings Without Rivalry” and “How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk” - I may disagree with Adele about her emphasis on “all feelings are okay,” but I like so much of what she writes and it’s been helpful to me as a parent.

I hope you tune in at 2:00 to AM1160/WYLL, or www.wyll.com, or later here or tomorrow on NationalReview.com

(Adele will be speaking in Chicago to the Lincoln Park La Leche League on March 19th! You can find out more here - just paste this into your browser.)

Radio Show - Bringing Up Geeks

Hi Friends - you’ll want to tune in to “It Takes a Parent” today at 2:00 central, when producer Lynne and I talk to columnist and author Marybeth Hicks about her forthcoming book, “Bringing up Geeks: How to Protect Your Kids in a Grow-up-too-fast World.” Hicks says we should redefine the word GEEK to stand for “Genuine, Enthusiastic, Empowered, Kids.” The question I’ll ask Hicks is “is it we parents who worry too much sometimes about whether our kids are cool?”

You can listen at AM1160/WYLL, www.wyll.com, or tomorrow listen to the show and now get the podcast from NationalReview.com.

As always - thanks for tuning in!

Lynne and I will also be talking to one of sponsors, Christina Steil, dermatologist of Hinsdale and my own family dermatologist, about winter skin care. You will want to tune in!

Listen to “It Takes a Parent” at 2:00 central on WYLL/AM1160, streaming at WYLL.com, or afterward here on my blog or tomorrow on NationalReview.com, where you can now download the podcast!
